O'Grady's father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton and went to Wheaton North School, graduating in 1981. She appeared as a model in commercials for a while before relocating into Los Angeles. O'Grady's career began as model and actress for commercials in Montgomery Ward. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby and was later a regular role in the ABC Drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. The actress has also appeared as a guest as a guest on independent films as well as television series. Donna Abandando, her first significant role in the ABC police show NYPD Blue was her character. O'Grady portrayed the long-haired secretary of the unit from 1993 until 1996. The actress was nominated to win an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actor in a drama each year. In addition to the her castmates, she was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in the Drama Series in 1995.
