O'Neil joined O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when the singer was still in high school. The singer made it through to the top tier of contestants after the judges praised her vocal ability. O'Neil received excellent praise from the judges, however she was a victim of significant loss in the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted into the bottom three and second-bottom two places and bottom two, respectively. The judges were astonished by the results and encouraged the audience to support those with great singing talent, like Melissa. O'Neil wasn't in the third place again following an impressive string of performances. With two other stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, when O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two contestants, the judge Werner reported that newspapers in the early morning will read: O'Neil beat Goudie in order to be the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest winner of the show's record . O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
