His career as a coach began in 2013 when he became the superstar of the Kansas freshman class Andrew Wiggins. After reviving the Golden Eagles, Self was hired by crosstown rival Tulsa and spent three seasons (1998 from 2000) in Tulsa, accumulating a best-ever record of 74-27. Self guided the Golden Hurricanes of Tulsa to two NCAA Tournaments in 1999 and 2000. Self directed his team of Golden Hurricane in 1999-2000 to their first-ever Elite Eight.
